Whether this matters to most guitarists or not is hard to say, but if you want to be able to control MIDI devices, you'll need a second interface to handle MIDI. This is extremely cool and in my opinion, a major feature that Line 6 sort of glosses over in their marketing. The MIDI response seems somewhat "quantized," but in actual use this isn't terribly significant. You need to go online to get a reference of controller mappings and such; I don't understand why it wasn't included in the help file, other than that the MIDI implementation may evolve over time, so Line 6 might not have wanted to put it on the physical distribution CD.

The advantage is that if getting the Toneport ux2 forces you to upgrade, you'll be glad you did — SP2 and TonePort can handle guitar, microphone or line level signals through its various toneport ux2 - guitar and vocals can be recorded at the same time and routed to different tracks on your sequencer, as there are two internal stereo sends.

A stereo monitor input jack lets you monitor external sounds alongside the computer audio, while adding footswitches enables you to control the various TonePort and sequencer functions. There are 16 guitar amp models, toneport ux2 bass amp models and six vocal preamps. On top of this there are 24 effect modules that can all be used on guitar, bass or vocals, and if these aren't enough, you can download optional Line 6 Model Packs from Line 6's web site to upgrade your software to include all the Pod XT models or go further and buy the additional Vetta amp and effect models currently available to Pod XT owners.

New to the Toneport are models of classic mic preamps and studio effects. The amplifiers that you do get cover a broad tonal spectrum and include models 'inspired' by various Marshall and Fender classics as well as Vox, Soldano and Mesa Boogie. As with the Pod XT, you can switch speaker cabinets around to get more tonal permutations and there are some superb effects, including a very realistic tape-loop echo complete with wow, flutter and just the right degree of degeneration as the sound repeats. At the very start of the effects chain is a conventional noise gate, but there's also a new hum reducer that works by first 'learning' the hum from your guitar and then reducing it.

The manual doesn't say whether this is achieved by adding it back to the guitar signal out of phase, by automatically configuring a series of notch filters or by subtracting toneport ux2 noise fingerprint, but it works.TonePort UX2 Ins and Outs: Inputs: 2x XLR mic preamp inputs with +48V phantom power and trim knobs; 2x 1/4-inch instrument inputs, including a dB pad.
